TD Summer Reading Club Results

Find out on September 6th who read the most books and claimed this year’s grand prize! Also tune in that day to find out if we reached our 3,000 book reading goal and for the results of this summer’s Adult Reading Challenge. Winners will be announced on our website and social media.

Story Skate - Community Centre Arena

Enjoy this free movement-based short story time on the ice that includes music, dancing and fun props. Parental supervision is mandatory. Recommended for ages 3-5. Registration required.

Author Visit: Ted Barris - Smithville Branch

Tuesday September 10 @ 3:30pm
Historian and freelance journalist Ted Barris will be joining us to discuss his latest publication, The Battle of Britain. Learn about Canada’s contributions to WWII and the significance of this often overlooked battle that set the stage for Ally victory. Registration required. We acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts through the Writers’ Union of Canada.

Truth & Reconciliation: Orange Shirt Day - All Branches

Saturday September 28 @ 1:00pm
Wear your orange shirt while painting rocks in remembrance of the children who did not come home from residential schools. These remembrance rocks will be permanently displayed in our Indigenous Healing Garden, located at our Wellandport branch. All ages. Drop-in.

Book Worm Challenge - All Branches

From October 20 to 26 we will be celebrating Ontario Public Library Week. Together let’s work to create the longest paper chain book worm ever! Write your name and why you love your library on a provided strip of book jacket and we’ll add it to our chain. Drop-in.

Gaming For Seniors - Smithville Branches

Wednesday October 30 @ 11:30am
Be the coolest senior in town AND impress the kids by learning all about the latest gaming technologies. Learn how to use our Nintendo Switch and VR (Virtual Reality) headsets while socializing and enjoying refreshments. No experience necessary. Drop-in.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten - All Branches

Ongoing
Attention parents and caregivers: join this growing movement to read every child 1,000 books before kindergarten. Reading to your infant/toddler/child teaches vocabulary, introduces the connection between pictures and words and creates lasting bonds. Register at any Branch to begin your journey. We‘ll keep a log of the number of books read and offer incentives along the way.

Tinker Time - Wellandport Branch

Saturdays @ 11:00am; September 7 to September 28
It’s time to tinker! Join us for this month-long introductory robotics series where we explore coding, circuits, Ozobots and the Sphero programmable robots. Recommended for children ages 6 to 10. Registration required.

Maker Mondays - Smithville Branch

Alternating Mondays @ 6:00pm; September 9 to October 21
Learn how to create new projects every Maker Monday using our amazing MakerSpace equipment and other STEAM techniques. Recommended for children ages 8 to 12. Registration required.

Therapy Tails - Smithville Branch

A 6-week story time program for young children that incorporates movement games alongside early literacy to help develop better physical awareness, improve gross and fine motor skills and learn how to navigate social movement relationships. Come and spend the afternoon creatively crafting with library staff. Recommended for children ages 8 to 12. Registration required.

Firefighter Storytime - Smithville Branch

Thursday October 10 @ 11:00am
October 6th to the 12th is Fire Prevention Week and to raise awareness we will have fire safety book displays and safety swag available at all locations. Drop-in on the 10th for story time with local firefighter John Vajda, from our very own West Lincoln Fire Department. Fire truck tours will be available following story time. Drop-in.

Project Fashion - Smithville Branch

Newcomers and pros alike are welcome to learn all about sewing and fashion with experienced costumer, Sarah. In this 4 part series we will be making our own accessories, customizing shoes, designing bags and upcycling old t-shirts into something new. Recommended for teens ages 13 to 17. Get Baking! teaches teens basic baking skills while making a new, fun and tasty treat each month. In September we’ll be making apple crisps, and October’s recipe will have teens baking pull apart pizza bread. Recommended for teens ages 13 to 17. Registration required.

Place your orders for fresh and affordable boxes of produce, either in person at Smithville Branch (cash only) or online at linksforgreenerlearning.org. The deadline for orders is September 11 and October 9, with deliveries being made to Smithville Branch on September 18 and October 16.

Niagara Region Waste Management Info Booth - Smithville Branch

Niagara Region Waste Management will be set up in the library to discuss and promote the upcoming Waste Management Strategic Plan. Residents are invited to engage in the development of the plan, ask questions and bring forth considerations for the team. Drop-in.

Stop into our Smithville location to meet the Crawford Chiropractic team and learn how to get your back on track. Learn more about degeneration, the nervous system, how to improve your balance and more. Have more questions? The craft club is a 2-hour monthly program that teaches a new project each month to showcase the amazing crafting ability of the Cricut Maker 3. September will feature interchangeable seasonal “Home” signs, and in October we‘ll be making glow-in-the-dark artificial pumpkins. No experience is necessary. Registration required.

Painting the Palate - Caistorville Branch

Fridays @ 1:00pm; September 13 & October 11
A monthly social art program that explores different types of painting mediums. In September we will be using paint to recreate French painter Georges Seurat’s pointillism masterpiece, The Siene at la Grande Jatte (1888). In October we will use gouache to paint a cloudy night sky. Registration required.

Learn how to create handmade cards for any season! The theme for September’s class is "Thankful, Grateful, Blessed" inspired by the spirit of Thanksgiving. In October we will be making sunflower themed cards, and in November we’ll be getting a head start on our Christmas cards. Registration required.

The Cookbook Clique - Smithville Branch

Saturdays @ 3:00pm; September 28 & October 26
Have a passion for food? Join the clique! Using a different cookbook every month we’ll challenge ourselves to make something new. In September we’ll be making Chickpea Masala from Antoni in the Kitchen by Antoni Porowski. In October we’ll be cooking corned beef and root-vegetable hash with a side of johnnycakes from Martha Stewart’s book, Martha’s American Food. Registration required. Cost is $10 per person, per program (cash only). Please bring a reusable container large enough to fit two servings.
